Peel Harvey

The Peel-Harvey Catchment comprises an area of about 1.1 million hectares around the Serpentine, Harvey and Murray River systems (the latter includes the Hotham and Williams Rivers) that drain into the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary, a part of the internationally significant, Ramsar listed Peel-Yalgorup system.

The focus of Natural Resouce Management (NRM) within the catchment for much of the past thirty years has been on the issue of declining water quality in the Peel-Harvey Estuary; however the catchment extends well beyond the Swan Coastal Plain into the wheatbelt areas as far east as Narrogin and many addtional NRM issues such as salinity, biodiversity protection, acid sulphate soils and climate change are also of significant importance.

The Peel-Harvey Catchment has many active community NRM groups , as well as a strong presence from the State government agencies(such as the Department of Agriculture and Food, Department of Environment and Conservation and the Department of Water) who are all working together to improve the natural assets of the Peel-Harvey Catchment.

In March 2000 the Peel-Harvey Landcare community formalised an integrated catchment management approach to the Peel-Harvey with the establishment of the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council. The Council is an incorporated body comprising members of the community, as well as State and Local Government with experience and a keen interest in the sustainable use and management of natural resources. In addition to coordinating activities within the catchment, it assists the NRM community in working together to attract funding and share resources and experience.
