Blackwood

The Blackwood Basin Group was first formed in 1992 by a community concerned with the declining condition of the Blackwood River.

It is a non-profit, community-based organisation that coordinates environmental management within the Blackwood River Catchment. The catchment is divided into nine Landcare Zones and the NRM activities undertaken in these Zones are coordinated by Natural Resource Management Officers (NRMOs) in direct collaboration with community groups and landholders.

The aim of the BBG is to work with the community and landcare zones to manage these issues and to maintain a balance between environmental protection, cultural diversity and economic productivity in the Blackwood. BBG's core philosophy is: "Community ownership of NRM problems will produce appropriate solutions given adequate resources and technical assistance."

BBG developed the BestFarms project in 2003 which helps landowners develop and implement environmental management systems (EMS) on their properties across the South West of WA. Participants identify environmental impacts occuring on their property and identify ways to address those issues. There are currently over 80 landholders implementing an EMS in the South West, and BestFarms holds regular training workshops and field days free of charge.

The diversity of the Blackwood NRM community includes farmers, community groups, environmental groups, indigenous groups, industry and agency people.

People are our most valuable social asset in the Blackwood. Not only is community action the backbone of on-ground work but communities also contribute to planning, raising awareness, monitoring and reviewing projects.

Just under $6 million is being directed to a number of large-scale projects being implemented by the BBG. These new projects encompass the themes of land, water, people and culture and are funded under the South West Catchments Council's Investment Plan.
